NASA’s Robotic Mining Competition

May 22 - May 26

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

NASA’S EIGHTH ANNUAL ROBOTIC MINING COMPETITION

Fifty U.S. university teams will compete to operate robotic excavators to mine a simulated Martian regolith in a race against the clock. NASA’s Robotic Mining Competition challenges students to design and build a mining robot that can traverse the landscape of Mars. Robots must excavate and return for deposit to simulate an off-world mining mission. Abrasive characteristics of excavation, limitations of the mining robot and the ability to operate from a remote Mission Control Center add to the challenge. Teams must consider a number of design and operation factors such as dust tolerance and projection, communications, vehicle mass, energy/power required, and autonomy. Advances in Martian mining have the potential to contribute to NASA’s space exploration operations.

Event highlights include:

  • K-12 grade students are invited to visit the Exploration Station to build and program LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots.
  • FIRST® Robotics Teams will display and demonstrate FIRST® robots.
  • Students will also have the opportunity to interact with the mining teams as they are participating in the Robotic Mining Competition.
  • Opportunities for students to get hands-on experience in robotics.

Visitors are welcome to view the daily competition at the Rocket Garden. Learn more about NASA’s Robotic Mining Competition.
