Construction underway on Titus Landing mall

Although it did not start at the beginning of the year as planned, construction work is underway on the long-awaited Titus Landing Shopping Center in Titusville.

It’s really happening now.

Although it did not start at the beginning of the year as planned, construction work is underway on the long-awaited Titus Landing Shopping Center in Titusville. Workers were pouring a large concrete floor Wednesday for the Hobby Lobby store at the shopping center on the site of the old Miracle City Mall. “They are in full-blown construction,” said Brevard County Commissioner Robin Fisher, an advocate for the mall and development in North Brevard. “They are moving along.” Fisher said the flooring being poured was for the Hobby Lobby store, and that other portions of the mall construction would follow. “You’ll see walls maybe in a week or two,” Fisher said of the first store. “It supposed to be up in five months.”

Troy Post, executive director of the North Brevard Economic Development Zone, said while the Hobby Lobby floor is being done, there also are other elements of the shopping center under construction.
“The developer started work on phase one,” he said. Phase one includes a movie theater, Hobby Lobby and a Parrish Medical Center complex. The floor for Parrish should be started in about a week, and that facility could be completed in about 12 months. Stores could be opened before the end of the year.

The first phase of Titus Landing is expected to be about 190,000 square feet, and include Epic Theaters, restaurants, and clothing and specialty stores. When fully completed, the $60 million shopping center should be 320,000 square feet.

Demolition of the old Miracle City Mall to make way for Titus Landing started out with a lot of fanfare during a “demolition party” in February 2015 that attracted scores of residents eager to see a new place to shop locally. “The project has been going on for some time,” Post said. “I know it doesn’t look like a lot has gone on. It’s been very complex. Now, people are starting to see activity on the site, more visible work.”

On Wednesday, cement was being pumped from mixer trucks as workers in bright safety green and orange used machinery to smooth the floor. On other sections of the site, old pavement still was being removed. Work is ongoing on an extensive system to filter stormwater before it reaches the Indian River Lagoon.

Fisher said there were some difficulties for the developers along the way, with the hardest being gettingthe financing lined up. Now that it’s done, and the project can move on. “There are some additional things to do,” he said.

Titusville City Manager Scott Larese said the recent economic development in the city will be good for the mall, for businesses and for people moving into the area. “After all this waiting we’re finally seeing it take off,” he said. “We’re excited.”
