September 30, 2021 – The people behind the award-winning Brevard Zoo in Viera have a vision for a major aquarium at Port Canaveral, and recently port commissioners approved a development agreement to move forward on the project.

The 14-acre site will be just off A1A on the Banana River side of the port, creating a major attraction for visitors to the Space Coast. Plans are in place to break ground by 2024 with an opening as early as 2026.

Fundraising for the project is ongoing, with nearly half of the $85 million needed already committed.  The agreement with the port means that effort can kick into high gear.

According to the zoo’s website, the Aquarium benefits will include:

  • A chance to get up close to local marine life and habitats
  • Provide hands-on aquarium adventures
  • Protect wildlife that contributes to our coastal lifestyle
  • Help tackle threats facing the Indian River Lagoon
  • Teach responsible lagoon-healthy living
  • Generate tourism, create jobs and protect property values

The only aquarium along I-95 south of Charleston, SC, the Aquarium is projected to provide an annual total estimated economic impact of $85.5 million in area sales, supporting 937 jobs.

The Brevard Zoo has a proven 20-year track record and is recognized as the world’s largest community-built zoo, repeatedly ranked within the top 10 zoos in the U.S.  The Brevard Zoo also has critical missions of animal wellness, conservation and education.

There is little doubt the new Aquarium will continue this legacy of success.
