Education Committee Update – August 2018

Chamber staff worked with Education Committee members on this year’s Operation Thank Our Teachers. Teacher Appreciation/ Feeder School Breakfasts took place at Astronaut High School (Aug. 8th) and Titusville High School @ James Madison (Aug. 9th).  We provided breakfast, courtesy of Mr. Submarine and Salads and DIYM Catering, and goody bags full of trinkets and discounts from Chamber members to 700+ teachers.  Bags were also given to teachers at Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School and its feeder chain, and 3 private/charter schools in Titusville – St. Teresa Catholic School, Sculptor Charter and Park Avenue Christian Academy.

The following Chamber members contributed to the bags: American Space Museum, Beall’s Titusville, City of Titusville – Economic Development Division, City of Titusville – Fire Department, Community Credit Union, Coldwell Banker Coast Realty – Cecil Cornish, Coldwell Banker Paradise – Tami Leliuga-Shriver and Heart Care Centers of Florida.  Operation Thank Our Teachers was sponsored by: Community Credit Union and Coldwell Banker Paradise – Tami Leliuga-Shriver.

North Brevard College Night will take place on September 24th at Titusville Mall, from 5-7pm.  Invitations were sent to colleges/universities/trade schools during the Summer Break.  We also worked with The Florida Tour to advertise the event to schools.  Although the event was created to allow students in the North Brevard area ease of access to meet with college representatives, we made a special effort to invite students living in the Central Brevard area, including private and home schools.

Outstanding Young Adults applications were sent to Titusville area high schools in May and also during Teacher Development Week in early August.  A selection committee will determine 18 finalists who will be honored at the monthly Chamber luncheons throughout the year.  The 18 finalists will then submit an essay to compete for a $1000 scholarship toward college expenses.  The winner will be announced in May 2019.

We are implementing the Student Ambassador Program into the Committee’s program of work, this school year.  The area high schools will need to identify 6 students for the year.  Training will take place on Wednesday, September 26th at the Chamber.  Student Ambassadors will attend the monthly Chamber Membership Luncheons, assist Chamber staff with setup and check-in, and gain first-hand experience interacting with business representative, City and County officials, and, members of the general Titusville community.

The next Education Committee meeting will take place on September 14, 2018, 9:00 am in the Chamber Boardroom.
