Governmental Affairs Update – November 2015
Al Taylor, Coldwell Banker’s, was nominated to chair this committee in 2016.
We spent most of our time at this meeting listening to two (2) speakers. The first was Jim Ball. Jim reported about the space program and the legislation that was passed by the US Senate and House of Representative and was awaiting the President’s signature. Our own senators and representatives Posey, Rubio and Nelson were instrumental in the passage of the US Commercial Competitive Act. The use of the Space Station was extended until 2024. The entire Act is a 46 page document and included development of standards of things relevant and important to work with the FAA. It extends the learning period eight years, until 2023 about new regulations needed. A framework of ownership was also included. The relationship between commercial, private enterprise and governments needs to be balanced.
Peggy Busacca from the City of Titusville was our second guest speaking about the growth management in Titusville. She mentioned that the North Brevard Economic Development Zone has helped give a positive outlook on the picture of North Brevard. Two types of business growth are happening in Titusville, industrial and nature. We are becoming known for our trails and becoming part of the coast to coast trail loop. Our schools are part of the economic development of this area. Businesses will locate where there are good schools. New businesses are also looking for site ready properties. The zoning code is also being reviewed and revised. There was also conversation about the need to decide on how we want to grow.
