Group to Speak on Helping the Lagoon

January 4, 2023 – The Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition will give a free presentation on how septic and sewer systems impact the lagoon from 6 to 8 pm at the Titusville High School Performing Art Center on January 19, 2023.

Speakers

Randall W. Parkinson, Ph.D., is Registered Professional Geologist and an Associate Research Professor at Florida International University. As a coastal geologist, Dr. Parkinson specializes in evaluating the effects of climate change and sea-level rise on the built and natural environments. He recently completed a vulnerability assessment and resiliency action for the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program.

Todd Swingle, P.E., MBA, is the Executive Director of the Toho Water Authority that provides sewer and water services to Kissimmee, St. Cloud, and other communities in central Florida. He previously was the Deputy Director of Operations for Orlando County Utilities. Locally, he serves on the Citizens Oversight Committee for the SOIRL program and on the Sustainability Committee for the City of Cocoa Beach.

Brian LaPointe, Ph.D., is a Research Professor at Florida Atlantic University Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. His research interests include algal physiology and biochemistry, seagrass ecology, eutrophication and water quality, and marine conservation. He has conducted studies on the effects of wastewater on the water quality of the Indian River Lagoon.
