Get Inside the Gates for A Massive Launch

NASA’s Space Launch System rocket sits on Pad 39-B at Kennedy Space Center.

August 1, 2022 – Some of us remember when a launch was a major event, when the crowds would gather to experience a bone-shaking, rumbling display of power that took one’s breath away. Of course, every launch is a technological wonder, the result of teams of scientists and technicians working in precise coordination to move a vehicle from the Earth to space, but there’s something special about a craft that can go to the moon.

That’s why the first Artemis I test launch of NASA’s massive Space Launch System is going to be an event. And starting tomorrow a few lucky people will have the chance to get as close as any civilians will through a special opportunity created by the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

Starting at 11 am on August 2, online only, special packages will go on sale that will allow visitors to get as close as 3.5 miles from the launch pad.

Appropriately named the “Feel the Heat Package”, it includes a 2-day admission to the complex, a meal, commemorative souvenirs, access to the Apollo/Saturn V Center and of course the viewing of the launch itself.

Now, as old-time launch watchers ourselves, we feel it’s only fair to point out that these events are technological wonders, and as such, they don’t always happen without a few delays. Especially with a new system such as the STS, it is not unusual for a rocket to miss a lift-off in order to examine a last minute anomoly, which means you may have to come back another day to actually see the spacecraft fly.

But a visit to the visitor center is worthwhile any day, so you will still have a great time.

So check out the packages and make your plans to Feel the Heat!
