Multi-Use Trail System Safety Tips; Commuting Options in Brevard County

It’s Spring Break in Brevard! We’re expecting increased vehicle traffic and the presence of thousands enjoying their time off from school. As we’ve recently held a grand opening for the bike trails in Titusville and held the Community Cycle Fun Day (February 24th), we know more adventure seekers will use this opportunity to try out the trails by biking, walking or horse riding. The Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO) has provided relevant and timely advice for those using or driving near the multi-use trail system. SCTPO Offers Trail Etiquette Tips for All Facility Users

Summer is fast approaching and many visitors and locals alike are planning on biking, hiking, or riding on one of the many trails in Brevard County.

When visiting a multi-use trail, such as the East Central Florida Regional Rail Trail in Titusville or the South Brevard Al Tuttle Trail in Malabar, there are a few courtesies to remember so that you and your fellow trail users have a safe and enjoyable time.

Stay alert – be aware of your surroundings, trail/road crossings, other users, wildlife, obstacles, and more.
Wear a helmet when bicycling.
Properly yield to other users. Bicyclists should yield to slower users, such as hikers and equestrians, and hikers should yield to equestrians.
Stay on the trail. Venturing off could not only harm yourself, but our natural environments.
Communicate – no matter how you are utilizing the trail communicate with other users when approaching and passing. If you are on a horse, communicate with users how your horse may react to passing bicycles or dogs.
Do not bring your dog to trails that do not permit pets. Also, maintain control, pick up waste, and keep on a 6-foot leash.
Have a plan. Know your route ahead of time and prepare according to weather, distance, and time.
