AGRITOURISM FUN ON the SPACE COAST

When you think of Florida crops, most people go right to citrus…. and it’s true, we are known for our delicious oranges and grapefruits…. but there is a lot more going on around Titusville, Florida than just citrus.

Blueberry season is happening now, and there are great options here in North Brevard to pick your own.

Ever After Farms U-Pick Blueberry Farm recently added a rustic event facility to their property for weddings and other destination gatherings, and they have acres of blueberries for you to pick (33,000 blueberry plants on 17 acres).  Bonus:  they are located right along the Florida East Central Regional Rail Trail, a new multi-use trail for walkers, runners, cyclists (any non-motorized vehicles).  During season, which typically runs from April through early June, they are open from 8 AM to 6 PM Tuesday through Sunday.

The biggest You Pick It farm is Sledd’s U-Pick Strawberries. You guessed it, they are known most for their strawberries, but owner Stacey Sledd shared their crop schedule and the events they hold throughout the year.

“Everything depends on the weather, but we plant strawberries in October and start picking usually mid to late December through March (maybe April if it doesn’t get too hot).

Blackberries are usually ready by May/June.  Our veggies are usually in the spring  (April/May) and fall (October-December).  Hoping this spring we’ll have potatoes (red & white), corn, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, carrots, beets, zipper cream peas, okra (red & green), roma & blue lake green beans, and cauliflower.  We’ll also plant collard greens in the fall.”

Sledd’s is also well-known for their sunflower maze, which hosts hundreds of photo shoots – both amateur and professional, as well as guests of all ages that want to try their hand at the maze.  Stacey reports that the sunflower maze usually takes about 8 weeks to grow once it is planted, however with a dry winter with very little rain, they expect the maze they planted in March to be ready very late in May.  They also have indicated that because the maze has been so popular, they are planning a second one which they hope will be ready in June

For an update on the activities and crops at Sledd’s, follow them on Facebook.   You can find their farm at the corner of Burkholm Road and Dixie Way in Mims.
