Blueberries, Sunflowers and Goats, Oh, My!
April 2, 2022 – We know you’ve heard about the Farm to Table movement, where locally grown food is quickly transferred to restaurants for the finest in fresh eating. But sometimes you can cut out the middleman, go to the farm, pick the fruit and take it to your own table. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.
Farms are also great places for family fun, when the sunflowers grow up over your head and the little ones can wander in a maze of yellow and green. And we can guarantee that no Minotaurs have ever been spotted in these mazes (you’ll have to go to Greek mythology to find one of those), but you may have to duck a bee or two.
If you are looking for some four-legged creatures that can put a smile on your face, track down baby goats for some farm frolicking. You may have to experience yoga along the way, but hey, nothing is ever easy.
Blueberries…
Like blueberries? How about fresh blueberries? How about blueberries that are so fresh they are still on the blueberry bush? That’s one of the draws of Ever After Farms at 4400 Bouganvilla Dr. in Mims (the farm is also a popular site for glamorous outdoor weddings). These guys have got this U-Pick-It thing down to a science and it couldn’t be easier.
At Ever After Farms:
- They take credit cards so you don’t need cash
- They supply bags to use while picking and that you can take home
- They sell bottles of water if you get thirsty
- When the season hits they have rows and rows of berries that can be navigated by wheelchairs and picked easily by small children.
It can be a little strenuous and the Florida sun might make you break out in a sweat, but the rewards are delicious. And after a cold winter up north, some of you are going to welcome our beautiful warm sun. Follow them on Facebook for the latest updates on when the season will start. Sunflowers…
Another Mims favorite is Sledd’s U-Pick Farm at Burkholm Road and Dixie Way. According to a recent facebook post the sunflower seeds were planted in the ground on March 5 and the farmers say the sunflower field will be ready 8 weeks after that. Sledd’s is also known for strawberries, so be on the lookout for that season, as well.
And goats, oh my.
Well, you learn something new every day. TIL (Today I Learned) that there is a place called the Sawgrass Acres Goat Rescue at 4430 Dixie Way in Mims a little way north of Titusville. Recently they held an event called Painting With Goats which involved, you know, painting with goats.
The folks who attended the event got to capture a likeness of a goat named Toby to canvas, then there was a “Goat Together” where goats “interact with you while you hold, pat, snap pictures and feed goat treats. Picture taking, laughing and goat cuddling are all highly encouraged.” And probably difficult to avoid under the circumstances. Check out more goat fun on Instagram.
Sawgrass Acres also offers Goat Yoga (no, we’re not making this up), where Certified Yoga Instructors “will blend movements and gentle stretches with the playful antics of live baby goats. Try the ‘downward goat’.” Email them at sawgrassacres@outlook.com and ask for more information. Let us know what you find out – it sounds like a blast.
