Planned Brevard Zoo Facility to Help the Manatees
February 28, 2023 – Manatees, like people, head south when the weather turns chilly. Many of them visit the Space Coast for our warm waters, such as the Indian River Lagoon. In the past, if one of these gentle giants needed special care, it would be transported to Orlando and SeaWorld to get healthy. But now the Brevard Zoo is in the planning stage to design and build an onsite acute-care manatee rehab facility. The $2 million manatee rehab is expected to open in 2023.
Once complete, the rehab area will have a 20-foot round pool, two 20-by-40-foot oval pools, storage for medical equipment, coolers to store lettuce for manatee snacks, a rescue vehicle for transports and other equipment.
The Brevard Zoo has a commitment to conservation and helping manatees is a great way to try to keep the Space Coast healthy. It’s also one of the top zoos in the country, so if you haven’t had a chance to visit, you won’t be disappointed.
