About North Brevard
North Brevard
Comprised of the rural communities and small towns, as well as the northern areas of Merritt Island-home to Kennedy Space Center and Canaveral Space Force Station–North Brevard is at the leading edge of Brevard County’s technology foundation, and it’s steeped in history. READ ON…learn about our rich history, our 50+ years of space innovation, our abundant nature, and who lives here–our people.
Confederate Col. Henry Theodore Titus donated generous acres of land for church and civic use and founded Titusville, Florida, in 1867. A mural on Main Street (on the Florida Mural Trail) depicts some of our historic leaders. Many historic places remain, and you can discover many in this online tour. Or pick up a Historic Sites brochure at the Titusville Welcome Center and explore.
Titusville, is at the heart of space technology and space innovation, in a rapidly expanding high-tech economy, with a coveted talent base and cultural influences of the past, present and future of space exploration.
Living here means watching rocket launches throughout the year--with our Epic Launch Viewing map, visiting Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex (ask about behind-the-scene-tours), the American Space Museum (preserving the history of the U.S. Space Program), or putting your hands in the handprint of astronauts at Space View Park –the first and only Walk in the nation that honors America’s astronauts as well as the men and women behind the scenes who helped America lead the world in space exploration. There are also monuments remembering the Mercury 7, Gemini, Apollo and Shuttle missions.
As a consequence of our location and our technology base, this is now a quintamodal transportation hub–with highway, rail, marine, air and space accommodations.
Surrounding Kennedy Space Center is the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which is a sanctuary for so many amazing species of animals including more than 300 bird species, bringing in an international audience of bird watchers. The St Johns River, wild and meandering, Scottsmoor Landing Santuary, Fox Lake Park (family friendly), Enchanted Forest, and a dozen places in the Refuge, and out to pristine Playalinda Beach, or anywhere along the Lagoon, in all directions from Titusville, there is wild nature, abundant and surprising.
The communities of North Brevard are incredibly interesting places, for nature, historic and cultural reasons, but the real gem of this area is its people. More likely than not, as you shop, dine, stop for a craft brew, or lean back along the Indian River Lagoon waiting for a launch, you will run into someone with enthralling stories to tell–meeting people who have been part of this amazing story. Most of them just refuse to leave.
