Meeting the Challenge

This past summer the Titusville Chamber of Commerce invited all of you to participate in a Photo Challenge. We picked a few subjects that highlight the best of our area, then let you hit the streets and beaches and trails with cameras in hand.  The results were spectacular.

The winners were voted on by the community. The photos that got the nod are not only beautiful but reflect how our locals really feel about our great town.

One of our winners has a great eye for pictures and is also involved in good works — and putting these two together created a shot that tells a compelling story.

You may have seen the photo. It’s a lovely wide shot of Playalinda Beach, where varsity members of the Titusville Baseball Team can be seen collecting and removing trash, placing it in Keep Brevard Beautiful buckets for disposal. The composition of the shot is impressive, with the clouds in the sky, the footprints of the boys and the wooden walkway all pointing toward a vanishing point in the distance. This gives the shot a focus, as the boys work to achieve their goal, which is represented by the horizon that they approach.

The  photo was taken by Andy Hanson, the varsity head coach of the Titusville High School Terriers Baseball Team. Andy has been an educator in Brevard for nearly two decades and has lived in Titusville since 1985.

And then he wowed us again, with another winning shot of the teens cooling off from their efforts by surfing in the Atlantic Ocean at Playalinda.

The industrious teens have also been involved in numerous clean ups at the Titusville High School campus and spruced up their own baseball field.

In the future, Hanson says the team will venture farther afield, with plans for voluntary community service at local nursing homes, feeding the homeless, helping local schools with landscaping and helping to encourage the next generation of athletes by volunteering at Indian River City Little League.

The motto of the program is #BiggerThanBaseball and the team certainly seems to be living up to the spirit of the phrase.

The Photo Challenge was met by many local photographers, who sent in outstanding images.  Here are a few for you to enjoy again.

We created the Photo Challenge as a fun activity and a chance for the people of Titusville to showcase their hometown. But the challenge had a positive side effect that we didn’t anticipate.

Many of the photos submitted told stories that we were happy to learn–like the story of Andy Hanson and his team. These are the kind of people you would expect to find living in Titusville, and it’s why we love to live here, too.
